If you have a cake designer that you really want to make your wedding cake, it is best to order your wedding cake 6 months to a year before the wedding to assure that you can retain their services.
Schedule a cake consultation/taste testing, estimate the number of servings of cake you’ll need, sign a contract and pay the retainer fee to hold the day for your wedding. A month before the wedding you should be able to finalize the number of servings of cake and pay the balance due on the cake.
